Report from the 45th International Conference
"Water Supply and Sewerage '24"

Organized by the Union of Engineers and Technicians of Serbia, and in cooperation with renowned institutions and faculties from Serbia and the region, the 45th International Conference "Water Supply and Sewerage '24" was successfully held, once again confirming its status as one of the most important expert gatherings in the field of water supply and wastewater management.

The co-organizers included: ITNMS – Institute for Technology of Nuclear and Other Mineral Raw Materials (Belgrade), Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture (Niš), Jaroslav Černi Water Institute (Belgrade), Faculty of Sciences – Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Environmental Protection (Novi Sad), Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy – Department of Inorganic Chemical Technology (Belgrade), Academy of Engineering Sciences of Serbia (Belgrade), IPIN – Institute for Applied Geology and Water Engineering (Bijeljina), and PUC "Vodovod" Kruševac.

The conference was held under the patronage of the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation of the Republic of Serbia, with support from the Engineering Chamber of Serbia. Over 100 participants from Serbia and the surrounding region attended, including university professors, researchers from scientific institutions, representatives of public utility companies, engineers from consulting, design and construction firms, officials from water management bodies, as well as equipment manufacturers and service providers in the fields of water supply, sewerage, and wastewater treatment.

The Conference Proceedings contain 53 peer-reviewed papers, accepted by the Program Committee, and grouped into six thematic areas: Organizational and Economic Aspects of Public Utility Companies in Water Supply and Sewerage; Water Sources and Drinking Water Treatment; Water Supply System Management; Sewerage System Management; Wastewater Treatment; Digitalization.

Due to the topicality of the subject, the Wastewater Treatment group featured two invited keynote papers. Key topics addressed in the proceedings include:

  • The economic pricing of water,
  • New EU regulatory solutions for wastewater and circular economy,
  • Economic and technical aspects of water and sewerage system planning and exploitation,
  • Stormwater drainage from roads and urban areas,
  • New technologies in drinking water treatment and wastewater purification,
  • Measurement in sewer systems,
  • Applications of machine learning methods in system management.

As always, the authors’ professional backgrounds were diverse, aligning with SITS’s mission to approach water supply and wastewater issues through a multidisciplinary perspective, enabling broader and more effective problem-solving.

While most authors were from Serbia, the proceedings also included contributions from regional experts. In line with the Ministry’s requirements, all papers were categorized and assigned DOI numbers. The proceedings, totaling 522 printed pages, were also published in digital format.

Beyond the core conference program—which included paper presentations and discussions—sponsor presentations were tailored to fit the conference themes and served as valuable additions to the main topics.

On the second day, a Round Table was held on the topic: “Defining Sanitary Protection Zones for Water Supply Reservoirs: Challenges and Solutions.” The strong attendance and vibrant discussion confirmed the importance of continuing such topical events in future conference programs.

On the final day, participants visited the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Kruševac, one of the most advanced and efficient in Serbia and the region. The hosts and co-organizers, PUC "Vodovod" Kruševac, provided a detailed tour. The visit concluded with a short guided tour of the city's key cultural and historical landmarks.

According to both organizers and participants, “Water Supply and Sewerage '24” was a complete success, enriching attendees with new knowledge and valuable professional connections.
